R.E.M. - It Happened Today

Featuring Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Joel Gibb of the Hidden Cameras, “It Happened Today” is a booming example of how R.E.M. has maintained excellence throughout the band’s career. Casually crafting a wonderful aural landscape, roughly half of the song solely utilizes a soaring vocal harmony which is underlined by the aforementioned guests, throatily humming along in the distance. Trailing “Discover” as the second song to be released as a primer for the band’s forthcoming 15th (!) studio album, Collapse Into Now, “It Happened Today” boasts a positivity that is expected to run throughout the entire album (another track set for the release is entitled “Every Day Is Yours to Win”); vocalist Michael Stipe (who turns 51 today) eventually exclaiming, “I have earned my voice.” Yes he has.
Produced in part by Jacknife Lee (U2, the Hives, Weezer), Collapse Into Now will also feature collaborations with Patti Smith, Peaches and Lenny Kaye, and is set to be released in March via Warner Bros.

 It Happened Today Lyrics

This is not a parable
This is a terrible
This is a terrible thing
Yes I will rhyme that, after, after all I’ve done today
I have earned my wings
It happened today. Hooray! Hooray!
It happened. Hip, hip, hooray!
We’ll leave the allegory to a different Bible story
Out of deference, defiance, the choice
Closing on a promise, after, after all I’ve done today
I have earned my voice
It happened today. Hooray! Hooray!
It happened. Hip, hip, hooray!
